Design
The Rose on 117 has been designed by the highly respected Cape Town firm, Fabian Architects, who have seized the opportunity to replace a derelict and featureless light industrial building with an edifice that injects an exuberant energy to the streetscape. It also plays an important mediating role between the monolithic glass modernism of 117 on Strand and the ornate facade of the neighbouring nineteenth century heritage building on the corner of Rose and Strand Streets.
‘’The Rose is on a landmark site in the heart of our city at a node where the colourful built environment of the Bokaap meets the CBD,” commented lead architect Lauren Bolus. “In this architecturally sensitive transitional area, we wanted to create a building that encourages curiosity, explores playfulness and activates this city node.
“The architecture seeks to encourage hope and optimism through a colourful aluminium façade grid that is designed to break down the scale of the building. This playful grid highlights vertical cores and creates elements of interest, rhythm and colour.’’
