Vredehoek, on the slopes of the iconic Table Mountain, is one of the most elevated of Cape Town’s City Bowl suburbs, and offers outstanding panoramic views of the CBD, Signal Hill, Lion’s Head, and Table Bay. Here Juan Bernicchi has skillfully reinvented a 1950s building, marrying existing art deco features with the demands of contemporary urban living, while respecting its architectural heritage. The most obvious deco feature is a wonderful sweeping staircase with moulded handrails, which has been retained and exaggerated through additional fenestration, creating a reception area that is flooded with light. Other deco features amplified in the redesign include the rounded balconies that sweep across its façade, adding to the dramatic presence the building enjoys, perched on the high point of an elevated, triangular site.
